And then

Alistair Wilkinson
24 February 2010

And then we missed that pen. And then, just before
we lost again, North left. A young man black and
white, the on-pitch summation of five years’ plight:
passion, commitment and kebabs; power with a
softening of the abs, a celebration before they call in
the tabs.

Of all the hope we have the best is for the local lads.

That defeat was at home to County, them with the
players but Notts the cash, Hughes delivered the
bash. And after a point at Bradford we’re Hughes’d
again and a cricket score loomed, the radio boomed,
the digital clarity of Burns’s doomed.

Standing in a kitchen on a Wednesday night, the
telly calls, turn off the light, come sit, forget, have
wine and baguette. Take a break from the stress,
come sit and do a bit less.

And then another new boy and the light stays on.
Close the door, don’t disturb the missus, say you’re
doing the dishes. One moment, one strike and it’s
back, the love and the hope curled into the top
corner.

I want eight wins from sixteen games.

And then…
